This is what the black footed ferret looks like.

The black footed ferret is a long thin mammal, with short legs and black paws.  It also has a black mask and a black tip on its tail.  The ferret spends most of its life in dug out prairie dog tunnels.  The black footed ferret is the only ferret native to North America. The black footed ferret was declared endangered in 1973, and in 1979 the black footed was believed to be extinct until a dog brought a dead one to his owner.  The ferret is declared endangered under the Endangered Species Act of  1973.  There are approximately 1,300 left in the whole world. Every organism has a full scientific classification based upon its characteristics.  There are 7 main classifications, and they are Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.

Kingdom: The kingdom of the black footed ferret is Animalia.  Animalia includes the animal kingdom and organisms that are multicellular, heterotrophs and eukaryotic.  Animalia must also reproduce sexually.

Phylum: The phylum of the black footed ferrets is Chordata.  Chordata are animals that have a nerve cord.

Subphylum: The subphylum of the ferret is Vertebrata. Vertebrata are animals with a backbone.

Class:Black footed ferrets are in the class of Mammalia. Mammalia are mammals who give live birth, have hair and mammary glands.

Order:The ferrets belong to the order of Carnivora.  The Carnivora eat flesh and have large, sharp teeth.  Some other animals that belong to the same order are lions, tigers and bears.

Family: Black footed ferrets are part of the Mustelidae family.  Mustelidae are fur bearing carnivorous mammals which include weasels, otters, ferrets and minks.

Genus: The genus of the ferrets is Mustela.  Mustela are small, active predators categorized by being long and slender with short legs.

Species: Finally, the species of the black footed ferret is nigripes.  Nigripes is the mustiline mammal of prairie regions of the United States.

Species Name: The species name of the black footed ferret is  Mustela nigripes.

  1. Hey Cody, although you have most of the required elements for the first two pages of your site, there are some minor typos and various formatting issues that you need to fix. You need to see me outside of class for me to help you fix these issues. One thing you can fix right a way is the way you are writing the species name of your animal. Species names are always italicized with the Genus capitalized, and the species lower case. Also, you need to add the subphylum “Vertebrata” to your taxonomy as well. Also, what you wrote about scientific classification in your first paragraph above is incorrect. So for now, you get 20/25 in this checkpoint. – Steve
